Described as a Trader on daughter's Baptism record.

 

1819-1820: was an "1820 Settler" (a fisherman and a trader) who travelled to South Africa as part of Clark's party accompanied by his wife Anne and two children. He had business interests in Jamaica as well as being a tea dealer with his father; he was well educated. Despite being married, he befriended Charlotte Whitfield on the voyage and she purported to be his siter. According to some sources, he kept his friendship as well as a relationship with Anne (she was a Catholic so no divorce was possible; they had two children together in South Africa), despite to all intents and purposes, treating Charlotte as his wife.

 

The family were allocated land at Clay Pits, near the Fish River about 30 miles from Grahamstown.

 

He died in action in the 1835 Xhosa War.

Charlotte Whitfield is the daughter of John Whitfield and Mary Lane. She was born Feb 1789 in Covent Garden area, London. Christening on 17 Mar 1789 in St Paul's Covent Garden, London. She died on 21 Jun 1875 in Gum Grove Farm, Fort White, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

General Notes:

IGI gives her name as 'Charlotta'...latinisation indicates High Church or Roman Catholic christening.

 

1810: acc. to family tradition she fell out with her family after the death of her father and travelled alone to South Africa. She was an '1820 Settler' with Clark's Party on board the 'Northampton' which sailed from Gravesend on 13 December 1819 and arrived in Algoa Bay (via Cape Town) on 30 April 1820, a journey of some four and a half months. She was befriended by John Brown, a married man with two children and she purported to be his sister. It is believed that he had had business interests in Jamaica (believed to be sugar and tea plantations).

 

1827: she was given permission to leave South Africa (to sort out a Will in London). She left on the 'Ann' in February 1827 and returned on the 'Barbara' in September 1828, having had her fourth child in London in 1828.

 

Date of death also recorded as 1876 [Lloyd's Weekly].

1815: educated at Christ's Hospital, London where he gained a rudimentary knowledge of medecine. Worked as a surgeon's assistant.

 

Henry was a physician, trader and adventurer who travelled up to what is now Durban in search of trade, mainly ivory. He is credited in establishing Durban. He befriended Shaka,

 

Generation 3

 

King of the Zulus, and gave him urgent medical attention following a stabbing by one of his tribe. In return Shaka gave him (and other Europeans) land and 9 wives, 3 of whom he gave to his brother Frank. He left up to 20 children from African wives as well as one son by Christianna Brown...in effect, he 'had his own tribe...' and one of his wives inherited his Chieftainship and that was passed down through the family. Seems to have been called Henry (also Harry and William) by the family and Margaret was called Emily?

 

Some records say he was born in London, some say Lancashire, but his mother appears to have been in South Africa at that time, so if that is correct, it would have been rather difficult for him to have been born in UK! Also there are queries re. date of his divorce and date of death.

 

Had at least 10 children.

 

About 1869: family left Eastern Cape, trekking up to the Transvaal after the discovery of diamonds at du Toitspan.

 

1872?: divorced/died. Death was when fighting the Bantu at Lydenburg in the Transvaal.

 

Before 1874: family settled in Potchefstroom.

Was a carrier in Orkney, Transvaal and then a farmer in Matijespan, Viljoenskroon, Free State;

 

Generation 4

 

operated a transport business in the Kimberley Diamond Fields, a pont across the Vaal River; sold business and bought a farm at Matjesfontein in the Orange Free State with the proceeds.

 

His wife Amy was also a second cousin.

 

At the outbreak of the Boer War, he joined the local commandos of the Free State near Kroonstad. After a patrol, he returned home to find that his farm had been burnt down by Captain Kloppers, acting on instructiuons of General C J de Wet, the reason being 'because he was English'. He then joined the British side and the British asked him to form and lead the Kroonstad Scouts because of his markmanship and his knowledge of the area. The Boers put a price on his head and he was killed in 1901, seemingly by one of his former friends.

 

Was a Sergeant Major, died of wounds near Kroonstad. At time of death was a farmer at Matjespan, nr. Kroonstad.

 

Amy Cawood is the daughter of Thomas Cawood and Frances Richards. She was born on 19 Aug 1868 in Eastern Cape, South Africa. She died on 05 Apr 1946 in Free State, South Africa.

 

Alfred Leo Whitfield and Amy Cawood. They were married on 20 Sep 1892 in Klerksdorp, South Africa. They had 5 children.
